This project is trying to explore fictional economies beyond money through co-design and collective imagination. As currency became abstracted from social bonds, value was reduced to a single metric—money. Inspired by conversation as a form of exchange, it uses the universal yet ambiguous nature of emoji, as a tool to prototype fluid, negotiable value exchange. The platform is both an experimental tool and an evolving object, challenging the idea of standardized value. By co-creating alternative systems, it aims to question: If we once invented the monetary system, can we now invent new ways to value everything?

-If Money is the Language, Can We Speak in Emoji?

Background:

Anthropological and archaeological research shows that there is a lack of evidence for the "myth" that barter naturally develops into currency exchange. It is more likely that currency was promoted to the market due to the ruling needs of power institutions, and gradually separated from its original function of carrying social relations and became a financial speculation tool.

Currency has always played different roles in its development. If this activity of expressing and exchanging the value of things through standardized currency is not innate to humans or the inevitable result of social development, then can we find other ways?

Introducing the universal & ambiguous nature of emoji, as a diverse currency mechanism to exchange.
